Mail Distribution Centre, Spenge

New distribution centre relies on a heat pump

Building owner: Stephan Große-Tebbe

Designer: Peter Bochmann & Sohn GmbH

Town/City: Spenge

Many German towns have a Poststrasse, precisely because there is a post office branch or base there. This is also the case in the East Westphalian town of Spenge, just north of Bielefeld. However, now the Poststrasse has lost its eponym: the delivery centre is leaving the centre of Spenge and literally moving out into the countryside to an industrial area on the edge of the town. Investor Stephan Grosse-Tebbe has invested €1.2 million in the construction of a single-storey building and is renting it to Deutsche Post and DHL. Up to 34,000 letters and 10,000 parcels have been handled here every week since November 2023. And although it has a high roof, the building still has to be heated for its employees. And that is done sustainably and in a future-proof manner using a heat pump.

Kampmann’s KaClima S stands out from the crowd on account of its compact design and efficient operation. The units meet the requirements of the EU directive with energy efficient classes of A++ to A+++, thus significantly reducing their energy consumption and environmental impact. A further contribution to environmental protection is the use of the refrigerant R32, which reduces the CO₂ equivalent by up to 75 percent compared to conventional refrigerants, yet with unchanged cooling and heating performance.

In the post distribution centre in Spenge, the KaClima S has been supplemented with an additional heating element with in-line storage tank. The heat pump here has been designed for a bivalence point of minus five degrees Celsius. Only when the outside temperature has dropped below this level will the electric heating element come into play.

TOP unit heaters then distribute the heat thus generated through the building. These robust units contain sophisticated technology: they work with EC motors, run extremely quietly, thanks to their whisper-quiet, sickle-blade fans, and are perfectly suited for use with a low-temperature systems, as it the case here in Spenge. The TOP unit heaters are fitted with a KaMAX high-efficiency diffuser to distribute the air even more evenly throughout the building. Thanks to the circular arrangement of its adjustable fins, the air can be distributed perfectly throughout the space depending on the local conditions.

This efficient overall system is controlled from the Kampmann SEL control panel. It monitors and controls up to 60 secondary units and also features a touch display.
